Reading & Math

Reading for Pre-K through Grade 2
Students Pre-K through Grade 2 learn to read with Reading Mastery Level I or Level II, a reading program that teaches the skills the child needs to master the basics of beginning reading.  The concept underlying Reading Mastery is that virtually all children can learn if teachers teach them carefully.  The program therefore provides the kind of careful instruction that is needed to teach the basic skills.
Like many other programs, Reading Mastery includes prereading exercises, activities associated with beginning decoding, work with symbol identification, rhyming, comprehension activities, and so forth.  Unlike many other programs, however, Reading Mastery presents each of these activities in a carefully programmed sequence.
1.  The tasks are structured as simply as possible.
2.  The practice the children receive is carefully controlled and realistic.
3.  The sequence of skills is structured so that the children master all the skills they need for later, more complicated tasks.
4.  What the teacher does and says in teaching and correcting the children is specified rather than general.

The reason for the attention to detail in the design of the program is that details make a difference.  Well-intentioned teachers frequently confuse children with explanations that are beyond the children's understanding.  General teaching suggestions don't give the teacher enough direction and frequently lead to activities that don't reach every child.  Poorly sequenced tasks may further confuse the child, delay their learning, and perhaps result in their losing interest in reading.  Reading Mastery prevents these problems from developing.

Math Program Description
Students working at a 1st through 7th grade level in math become stronger students with math tutoring.  All students are placement-tested at Stapleton Learning Center prior to tutoring.  Students learn from the Connecting Math Concepts (CMC) program.

Connecting Math Concepts differs from traditional approaches because it has been field tested and revised. The organization of how skills are introduced, developed, and reviewed is also unique. In traditional programs, the curriculum is called a spiral.  Students work exclusively on a particular topic for a few lessons.  Then a new topic (often unrelated to the preceding topic) is presented, leaving little or no time to practice the preceding skill.  Unless skills are continuously used and reviewed, students' performance will deteriorate and they will not reach mastery.
In Connecting Math Concepts, skills are organized in tracks.  A track is an ongoing development of a particular topic.  Skills are taught and reviewed continuously and students master new concepts throughout the program.  This is achieved by developing skills and concepts in small steps and providing sufficient practice so the student becomes automatic in applying the skill.  Because of this level of mastery, students become more confident and excited about math.
